Life + Deric + Media = Homemade

My favorite television show of all time is Frasier.  It ran for 11 seasons, and I own them all :)  It is very clever, and my favorite feature is the awesome exchanges between Fraiser and his brother Niles, who are shockingly similar.  They each have their individual idosyncrosies, but they are more similiar than not.  When I tell people that Austin is one of a kind it's only half true.  I mean techincally everyone is one of a kind, but there is one person in the world that shares more similarities with Austin than differences.  As Austin is quite unique this is rather miraculous and would make a great sitcom.
Meet Deric.  Deric is Austin's older brother.  Needless to say Deric's wife Rebecca and I share a special bond.  Rebecca and I once filmed Deric and Austin while they listened to all the stops on the tabernacle organ while following along in the companion book ("Oh, the Hinckley stop, lets listen to that one again!").  If you all ask very nicely I may post the footage.  Deric and Austin share the same opinions about being on time, holding the baby while wearing a suit, ironing, and a plethora of other things.  They also have a very direct way of speaking on the phone:
Deric- "Hey, I just wanted to call and let you know that President Packer is walking with a cane, that's the first I've seen of that."

Austin- "Oh really? Ok."
Deric- "Yep,ok, Bye."
Austin- "Bye."
(Yes, this is an actual conversation I witnessed the month after we started dating)
Sometimes telling them apart is very difficult:

However, Austin prefers my Peanut Butter Brownie trifle while Deric likes the Almond Cherry Trifle.  Thank heavens for trifle!!

I never understood what people meant when they said "being married is hard work."  I love being married, but lately Austin and I just aren't as insync with each other as usual.  We are so busy that "us time" is hard to come by and when we want to unwind and shut off we usually turn to the tv.  We have decided to try an experiment.  Starting tomorrow we will be media free for one week.  Aside, from computer necessities there will be no tv or computer in our home. If you want to join in feel free.  I think this will be a great way for us to reconnect and restrict the influence of the busy world in our home.  I will let you know how it goes...but not until next week.  SOOOO...
Because I won't be watching anything while the baby naps, for the rest of the week, I will have a free hour or two during the day.  So for the next 10 people who either comment on this blog or email me...yes I will check the time stamps so its fair (nicolebeckstrand@gmail.com) :)  I will send you something homemade.  I will even let you choose if you would prefer food, or an accessory.  The catch is, if I send you something you have to find time before the end of the year (I feel this is a realistic timetable for those of us that are so crazy we can't even think past tomorrow) to send at least 5 people something homemade.  Spread the love!

  1. This isn't really fair because you always make me homemade stuff, but I loved your post. Deric and Austin are truly unique and delightful.

  4. The media fast is a fantastic idea! Our Stake President, President Goobie started challenging us to do that before every Stake Conference. It was amazing, and hard, but sooo worth it. We were able to enjoy the blessings of being with our family! Good Luck! Love you!

  5. Nicole, I feel now is a great time to step out of the darkness of anonymity and admit I read your blog. There, I did it. Sometimes I find Kate giggling on the couch while reading your blog. I love your writing and your stories! And yes, I too giggle while reading them.

  7. Nic, LOVE this post. Kevin and I have just been talking about how easy it is to turn to entertainment with a baby, in the middle of the night, when Kevin gets home, in the middle of the day, etc... Something to break up the crying and pacing right? But goodness it wears me as much or more than my lack of sleep, it seems like it takes the edge off emotions and I just end up feeling, blah. You know? I hope your experiment goes well! Kevin and I have had really great experiences with it ourselves.
