Life + Lassoing + God = Smallville

A few months ago Austin got a job as the choir conductor for a Methodist church in Salt Lake. They meet at the same time our church does so he attends the service after our regularly scheduled one on Sundays. Today I decided to go with him and as the hymn started I could not believe my eyes. The woman conducting the music had an 18'' baton and every beat rebound looked like an attempt to lassoe an out-of-control rodeo calf. I'm not usually that picky when it comes to conductors but I started to laugh out loud!! (as quietly as possible of course). Without looking up from his hymnal or asking what I was laughing about Austin just tonelessly whispered, "I'm used to it." and kept singing. It was as if he was trying the old "if I can't see it , then its not real" trick. Next time I'm going to use that one too...If I can't see the lady trying to lassoe the calf with her sword, then she doesn't exist.

My husband loves one television show above all others...Smallville. Laugh, go ahead, but the man loves his comic book characters. For those of you unaware, the show is in its tenth and final season. I was making dinner the other night when I heard from the other room the following:

WHAAAAAAAT????!!!!! No WAAY!! That's NUTS, that's NUTS!, Oh that's CRAZY!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!! WOOOOO!!! (repeat)

I went into the room to see what the fuss was all about. Apparently Clark had finally told Lois his secret (ya know that secret about him having super powers). Austin was watching the same thirty seconds again, repeating the above elations.
The next morning in the car he said,
"the only thing that matters right now is Smallville."
It was said with the anxious intensity of a six year old about to enter Disneyland.
He paused merged onto the freeway and then qualified his statement with the same intensity....
"The only things that matter in life are you, God and Smallville."
I smiled to myself, and slipped in a quick thank you as he turned on Talk Radio.
